Study in Turkey: The Complete Guide for Pakistani Students

Academic & Language Requirements

For Undergraduate

• Academic: Minimum 50–60% in Grade 12 / FSc / A-Levels. Competitive programmes (medicine, engineering at top universities) require 70%+.
• English-taught programmes: Most universities do not require IELTS, TOEFL, or any English proficiency certificate. Admission is typically based on your academic profile. Some competitive programmes may require proof — verify with the university.
• Turkish-taught programmes: Proof of Turkish language proficiency (TYS or TÖMER certificate, typically B1–B2 level).
• Age: 18+ minimum. No official upper age limit.

For Postgraduate

• Academic: 4-year Bachelor's degree with 2.5+ CGPA. Competitive programmes require 3.0+.
• IELTS: Not required by most universities. Some competitive programmes may ask for it — verify with the university.
• GMAT/GRE: Not required for Majority of universities.
• Relevance matters: Your Bachelor's major should substantially match your target Master's.

Degree Duration

Application Process

Applications to Turkish universities are submitted directly through each university's own online portal. Some universities also work with authorised agents. Apply to 4–6 universities across different competitiveness tiers.

Intake timeline — September (Fall, Main)

January (Spring) intake for Postgraduate: Smaller, fewer programmes available. Apply Aug–Oct. Undergraduate has no January intake — September only. Always confirm your programme accepts January intake.

Student Visa Process

Pakistani citizens apply through the Anatolia Visa Application Centre (VAC). The university provides health insurance as part of the visa package. No separate health insurance purchase is required.

Required documents

• Valid passport (6+ months validity)
• Completed visa application form + 2 passport photos
• Official acceptance letter from your Turkish university
• Attested academic documents — Matric/FSc: IBCC → MOFA; Bachelor's: HEC → MOFA
• Bank statement showing PKR 2 million minimum, visible for at least 25 days before applying
• Police character certificate (covering last 5 years)

Visa fee and processing

• Visa fee: PKR 60,000–70,000 via Anatolia VAC. This includes the visa processing fee, dummy flight booking, dummy accommodation proof, and health insurance arranged by the university.
• Processing: 1–3 weeks — typically faster than most other destinations
• Apply at least 4 weeks before departure
• Visa interview: The VAC may call you for an interview. Be prepared to explain your study plans and financial situation.

After visa approval — before you fly

• Verify your visa sticker: Check your name, passport number, programme name, and validity dates are all correct.
• Check the entry deadline: Your visa includes a "must enter by" date. Arrive in Turkey before this date.
• Book your flight only after verifying the visa is correct.
• Arrange accommodation — confirm university dormitory or off-campus housing before arrival.
• Pack essential documents in hand luggage: passport, visa, acceptance letter, attested documents, insurance papers.

Total Budget to Leave Pakistan

Turkey does not use a blocked account. You only need to show a bank statement — your money stays accessible.

After Arrival in Turkey

Work Rights

International students in Turkey can work part-time, but there are year-based restrictions.

Monthly minimum wage (full-time): ~$703 USD (~PKR 1.95 Lac) as of Jan 2026. At this rate:

Undergraduate (24 hrs/week): ~$297/month (~PKR 82,500) — covers most living expenses

Postgraduate (full-time): ~$703/month (~PKR 1.95 Lac) — full minimum wage

Permanent Residency Pathway

After completing your degree, Turkey offers a clear pathway to long-term residency. Here is how it works:

Step 1: Short-Term Residency Permit (after graduation)

After you complete your studies, you can apply for a Short-Term Residency Permit valid for 6–12 months. This gives you time to find an employer willing to sponsor your work permit.

Step 2: Work Permit (employer-sponsored)

Once you find a job, your employer applies for a work permit on your behalf. The work permit is initially valid for 1 year and is renewable. Your employer must prove they could not find a Turkish citizen for the role and must pay into social security for you.

Step 3: Long-Term Residence Permit (after 8 years)

After 8 years of continuous legal residence (student years + work years combined), you can apply for a Long-Term Residence Permit. This is essentially indefinite residency — you can live and work in Turkey without needing an employer sponsor.

Step 4: Citizenship (after 5 years total)

You can apply for Turkish citizenship after 5 years of total legal residence, with at least the last 3 years on a work permit. Requirements:

• Stable income — proof of employment and tax contributions
• Turkish language proficiency — minimum B1 level
• Clean criminal record — no serious offences in Turkey or abroad
• Intent to settle — demonstrate ties to Turkey (property, family, employment)

Scholarships

• Türkiye Scholarships (Türkiye Bursları): Full tuition + accommodation + monthly stipend (TRY 1,500–3,000/month) + one-time flight ticket + Turkish language course. • Who can join: Spouse and dependent children under 18.
